collage

Sam Jedig has worked with collage since the early 1980s – a practice he describes as “stopping points in the great image stream of reality.” The works deconstruct existing visual material and rebuild new layers of meaning – often presented in series with titles such as Kulturfragmenter and Cover. Each collage acts as a counter-image to the overwhelming visual consumption of contemporary culture and serves as a pause space within the artist’s overall body of work.

Nothing in the works is original in the traditional sense – everything is reused, sampled, recontextualized. By working deliberately with fragments and archival materials, Jedig aligns himself with a collage tradition that spans from Dadaism and Surrealism to postmodern appropriation and mail art. Rather than presenting a singular image, the collages offer visual layering – a counter-narrative in which illusion is both challenged and reimagined.

Jedig uses the open structure of collage to create poetic collisions, critical shifts, and silent reflections. They function as moments of pause – and as passage.
