The Denmark Series (2017) by Sam Jedig is part of his ongoing Mask Series, exploring identity, visibility, and cultural belonging. The works are created on top of 19th- and 20th-century reproductions of Hans Holbein’s portraits of kings, queens, and nobility.
Masked figures wrapped in black merge with red-and-white fragments of the Danish flag, creating a dissonant mix of national pride and alienation. These anonymous faces feel strangely familiar, evoking group identity, exclusion, and the psychological weight of national symbols.
Unlike Jedig’s more reductive series, these works build meaning through layers. A recent masked queen stamp from his Artstamp.dk project continues this line of inquiry, blurring the boundary between celebration and critique.
Selected works from Sam Jedig’s Denmark Series 2017, created on vintage prints of noble figures. The masked characters merge Danish flags with anonymous faces, referencing national identity, group psychology, inclusion and exclusion. The works are visually striking, yet unsettling, questioning how identity is shaped, remembered, and performed.
