Nature Fragments is the title of an ongoing series of paintings that Sam Jedig has worked on since the early 1990s. These works function as pauses in his artistic practice — moments without ideological or narrative intent.
The paintings have no top or bottom. They are created from all four angles in order to avoid hierarchy or fixed meaning. Many of the works are painted with both hands simultaneously — a method that disturbs the body’s automatisms and releases gesture.
These are explorations of color, movement, and material presence. They evoke quiet, vegetative states — not as landscapes but as images without illusion. Several works carry the subtitle “Nothing Here”, pointing to the openness and resistance embedded in the paintings.
The series anticipates Sam Jedig’s later experiments with Smoke Cube Painting, where control is almost entirely dissolved and the image emerges through a chemical and physical process.
